It is due to fear that people buy extended car warrants. No panics, and the internal voice that murmurs, What next month, engine problem? Fair enough. Cars break. Wallets cry. You may even read real examples of how stories work on my site.

But the brochures will not tell one so.

Look through reviews of customers and a trend becomes apparent in no time. Happy buyers do not tend to leave long posts. Frustrated ones? They write novels. This does not mean that bad reviews are all gospel, but it counts the repetitions. And when ten people report the time lag in claims, then something must be amiss.

A first glance at coverage is magnificent. Big words. Long lists. Then you spot the exclusions. Wear and tear. Seals. Gaskets. That is half the out-of-bounds car. As one of the reviewers said: They touched on the idea of my car, but not on the real problems. This is painful, because it is, as a rule, so.

Pricing plays mind games too. Streaming subscriptions are light, nearly innocent, monthly plans. Work it out 3 or 5 years then the amount may compete with a large repair–or more. It is the same as insuring rain in the dry season.

Approval of repair is another problem. Some companies move quickly. Other individuals scratch their feet like it was a game. Your car is in a garage and there is some sort of a paper work somewhere. Days turn into weeks. You can even start naming your rental car as you are bored.

The mechanic choice problem is not as minor as some people might think. Small networks can be as different as telling you where you may have your dinner. You then are forced to choose between convenient and cover when you do not have your favorite mechanic who is not approved. Not a fun trade.

The importance of transfer policies is not accorded much attention. It may be sold with an active cover to promote the sale of a car. Customers are enamored with additional features- it is an extra cherry on the cake.

Customer service is the invisible factor. It is not until something goes wrong that you realize it. One of the reviewers noted that calling them was talking to a vending machine. That is hard to forget, as support is not there to create new problems, but to help solve the existing ones.

Reality check Reality check: Long warrants are bets. You are gambling that repair will be a more costly affair than the course of action. Sometimes you win. Sometimes the house does.

Some will not claim the warranty and save the money. One of the neighbors had done it with the argument, I would rather I were my own insurance company. Two years later his vehicle cost him a fortune to have fixed. He willingly paid out without any sort of hassle, no pressure, no phone calls, no approval drama.

Watch for pressure tactics. “Limited-time offer.” “Prices go up tomorrow.” Classic lines. Milk never goes out of wonderful coverage. Take your time.

nor be you quick to look in the contract. Yes, it’s boring. And so must it lose money to gain naught.

Reviews are your torch at night. and they will not enter the road, but they will mark where other men have gone astray–and how not to go astray with them.
